How to download crochet pattern purchased on Etsy.

What some people find very easy to do, is sometimes not as straightforward for others. As a pattern designer, who sells crochet patterns only in digital PDF form myself, I’ve realised that a few years ago. After replying to hundreds of ‘I didn’t get my pattern yet’ emails over the years I’ve finally decided to do a very comprehensive tutorial showing exactly how it works, so no one needs to struggle with this process ever again.

Below you will find a very detailed step by step photo and written tutorial on how to find the download links and save PDF crochet patterns you purchased on Etsy to your computer. You can also check out my ‘How to download crochet pattern from Ravelry post here if you also purchase your patterns on there.

Before I start explaining how to download the pattern, I need to explain the biggest misconception about purchasing patterns online. From the majority of the emails I get from customers I’ve realised that most people think that after they complete the purchase, they will get an email directly and manually sent from the designer with PDF patterns attached to it. Because of this, they very often miss the first option to download the pattern and they often think that the designer is to blame for not sending them the email with patterns fast enough or even forgetting to send it at all.

The reality is that the vast majority of patterns sold online (I’d say more than 95%) are ‘Instant Downloads‘ and only a small amount of patterns are sent manually by the designers. Sending files manually isn’t practical for designers as it would take them too much time and it would be too hard to keep up with sending all the patterns on time.

Instant Download means that you are able to download the file instantly after the purchase and you don’t need to wait for anyone to send the pattern manually. This is because the designer uploaded their PDF pattern to Etsy’s servers (online storage) when creating the product listing on Etsy. After you make a payment and it clears with your bank, you will get instant access to the links from Etsy so you can download the file straight away using one of the 3 options described below.

Note that in rare cases, for various reasons, your payment might not clear with your bank or PayPal straight away. In this case, you won’t get links until your payment clears. This is to protect the designer in case your payment gets rejected. If this is the case, you should get a separate email from your payment provider that they are processing your payment. They will also notify you when your payment clears. You will then get your links straight after.

How to know that the pattern you are purchasing on Etsy is an Instant download rather than a paper pattern that will be posted or manually sent file? This is written on the top left corner of the photo as well as in ‘Item Details’ section as highlighted in red on the photo below.
