Day 3 of my Free Crochet Flower Pattern a day challenge and this time I’ve made a flower that is growing wild anywhere I look in the seaside town of Southport (UK) where I live. It took me some time to find the actual name of the flower. At first, I thought it was a Seaside Daisy, but the flower seems to be shorter than the one that was my inspiration to crochet. Another guess was Prosperity Fleabane Daisy but this one seemed to have too many petals. After some more research, I’m about 95% sure it’s called Aster x Frikartii Monch.

This crochet flower was tricky to make as the flower has got many petals but the middle is quite small. See below my Free Crochet Aster Flower Pattern to find out how I’ve managed to achieve the effect of the 3D petals. Oh and sorry about the poor quality photos in the photo tutorial, I was taking them with my mobile while in the play barn/play centre with my son.
Free Aster Crochet Flower Pattern
I like to think my patterns are easy to read but if you are a beginner and still struggling with reading the patterns this book will help you:

Preparation:
I’ve used Drops Paris Cotton, but with it being so chunky I had to split it in half (it wasn’t fun so just try using thinner cotton ;)) and I just used 4 strands of yarn to make this flower. The yellow colour is 35 and the Light Blue Purple colour is 32. I used a 2.5mm crochet hook. In this pattern, I used US crochet terms.
I currently use Knit Pro crochet hooks as well as cheap bamboo ones if I’m missing any size in Knit Pro. They are nice as soft in a grip and the steel part is very smooth. I’m very happy with them, the only thing that I don’t like is I only own them in black colour as I bought them 3 years ago and they didn’t seem to have a colour choice back then. In the 2nd ch from hook make 10 sc.
At the end of the round join to the first sc by slip stitch.
Crochet Aster Flower Pattern – Round 2
In second round work sts in the front loop only. Make 10 sc, one in each sc from the round below.
You should achieve a ‘cone’ like shape, on the end of the round sl st to the first sc.

Flip the middle of the crochet flower to the back, here you can see the back loops of sc from the first round, we will be working another row of sc in those loops now to achieve a double row of sc so we can work petals in both rows of single crochet.
Crochet Aster Flower Pattern – Round 3
Sl st to the back of sc
and then sl st to the back loop of sc from the round below.
Now make 1sc in each back loop (total 10sc). On the end sl st to the first sc and fasten off.
That’s how the finished middle of the flower looks like from the top.

and this is how it looks from the side. You can see 2 rows of sc worked in the front and back loop of 1 row of sc from the first round. Now we will be working petals in each sc of both rows to achieve 20 petals.
Crochet Aster Flower Pattern – Round 4
In this round work all your stitches in the back loops of sc only.
Step 1. Sl st (new colour) to next available st.
Step 2. Make 6 ch
Step 3. Sl St to the second ch from hook
Step 4. Sl st to the remaining 4 chains.
Step 5. Sl st back to where you started (same loop as you began).
That’s the first petal made. Repeat Steps 1 to 5 until you have 10 petals.
Round 4 finished
That’s how the back looks like.

Join the blue colour by sl st to the first sc of the second row of sc. and repeat the pattern for each petal the same as in round 4.
Note: Notice the way your front petals are facing you, make petals in round 5 facing the same way rather than the opposite.
That’s how the middle of the crochet aster flower looks like.
